Where the Golf Course Runs Out to Meet the Sea

Hōkūala covers 450 acres on the east coast of Kaua'i, and Timbers occupies the part of it that matters most: the oceanfront edge, above Nāwiliwili Bay. The residences are large and few, two, three and four bedrooms in low buildings that keep their distance from one another, and the resort behind them is laid out for people staying a while rather than passing through. Trails for walking and cycling cross the estate. A working farm supplies the kitchen. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course finishes along the cliffs. It reads as a private estate that happens to take guests.

Why It Works

Three arguments settled it. The first is the residence format at genuine resort standard: full kitchens, laundry, separate bedrooms and lanais deep enough to live on, with a front desk and a concierge attached. The second is the culinary side, which most residence resorts treat as an afterthought and this one does not, since Hualani's cooks from The Farm at Hōkūala and the MICHELIN Key has followed two years running. The third is quieter but decides many trips: the estate is large enough that golf, pool, trails and beach never feel like the same crowded lawn.

Why This Location

The address is 3770 Ala'oli Way, five minutes from Lihue Airport and yet entirely out of earshot of it, which is the trick of this stretch of coast. Nāwiliwili Bay and Kalapaki Beach are below the property, calm enough for a first surfing lesson. Lihue's shops and the old plantation town of Kapa'a lie north within twenty minutes. The south shore beaches at Poipu are around half an hour, Waimea Canyon about ninety minutes, and Hanalei and the north shore about an hour. This is the island's crossroads, and it saves an hour a day of driving.

Residences Built for a Week, Not a Night

The floor plans start at two bedrooms, which tells you who this is for. Kitchens are full rather than token, there is laundry in the unit, and the lanais are sized as outdoor rooms with the bay in front of them. Because the residences also sell as private residence club and whole ownership, the fit and finish run above what a hotel would spend, and the storage is designed for people unpacking properly. Ask for the upper floors if the view is the point, and for a ground floor if small children and a pool are.

Hualani's, and the Farm Behind It

Hualani's is the signature table, seasonal and farm-driven, and its supply line is unusually short: The Farm at Hōkūala grows on the estate, and the kitchen builds the menu around what it sends up. The result is a resort restaurant people return to across a week rather than resigning themselves to on the first night. The MICHELIN Key, awarded two years running, is a recognition of the whole property rather than the kitchen alone, but the food is a large part of the case.

Golf, Trails and the Rest of the Estate

The Ocean Course at Hōkūala is an eighteen-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature layout with the longest stretch of oceanfront holes in Hawai'i, and it is the reason a good number of guests come. Non-golfers get the better end of the estate anyway: an extensive trail network for walking and cycling, tennis, a wellness programme and cultural classes, and beach valet service down at the bay. Check-in is at four and check-out at ten. Children are welcome throughout; pets are not accepted.
