Villas at the Quiet End of Hoonani Road

Poipu's beachfront is a short strip, and most of it is given over to hotel rooms. The Sheraton's villa wing is the exception: 126 units laid out as studios and one- and two-bedroom villas, each with separate living and sleeping areas, a kitchenette, an in-unit washer and dryer, and a lanai furnished for actually sitting on. The address is 2440 Hoonani Road, on the same beachfront campus as the resort itself, which means the villas keep their own quiet while the pools, the beach and three restaurants stay a few minutes' walk away.

Why It Works

The decision turned on what a week looks like. In a villa, breakfast happens on the lanai instead of in a queue, wet swimsuits go in your own dryer, and the children get a door to close. What the format usually costs is service and location, and here it costs neither: this is a Marriott-run property directly on Poipu Beach, with two pools, a whirlpool, a fitness centre and restaurant service on the sand. There are no resort fees, which on this coast is worth noting. It is the compromise most families are looking for and rarely find.

Why This Location

Hoonani Road runs along the water at the western end of Poipu, and the beach is immediately there rather than across a road. Poipu Beach Park, with its protected keiki pool and monk seals on the sand, is a walk east. Spouting Horn is a few minutes west by car, and Old Koloa Town sits inland, five minutes up Poipu Road, for coffee and the plantation storefronts. Lihue Airport is about fourteen miles, or half an hour. For Waimea Canyon and the west side, count an hour, and set off early.

Studios, One-Bedrooms and the Two-Bedroom Villas

The studios are the compact option: a king bed, a kitchenette and the same stacked washer and dryer as everywhere else, which is more than most hotel rooms on this beach offer. The one-bedrooms add a separate living and dining area, and the two-bedrooms are the ones worth asking for when two families travel together, since the second bedroom sits away from the living space. Ask about outlook when you book. Some lanais face the garden and its palms, others the water, and the difference sets the tone of the whole stay.

Dinner Over the Water, and the Luau Twice a Week

RumFire Poipu Beach is the reason to stay put in the evening: a terrace above the surf, creative Pacific cooking, and one of the better sunset positions on the south shore. Lava's on Poipu Beach handles the casual end, beside the ocean pool, for lunch straight out of the water. The Auli'i Luau runs twice a week with live music and traditional dishes, and it fills quickly in high season, so book it on the day you arrive rather than the day you want it.

Practical Notes Before You Book

Check-in is at four and check-out at ten, which is early by island standards; arrange late departures in advance. Children are welcome throughout, pets are not accepted, and accessible layouts vary between buildings, so confirm the specifics before booking. The kitchenettes are equipped for breakfasts, light meals and reheating rather than for full cooking, so plan the grocery run accordingly; the Koloa markets are a few minutes inland. A car is close to essential once you leave the south shore.

Check-in from 16:00 — Check-out until 10:00
