Where a Private Club Opens Its Gates to Guests

Kukui‘ula is a residential community first: a thousand acres of tree-lined drives, lava-rock walls and plantation architecture laid over the slopes above Poipu, built for owners rather than for visitors. The Lodge is how a traveller gets inside it. Forty accommodations, spread across three neighbourhoods, are held in the rental programme and run with a front desk, housekeeping and a concierge, while the club at the centre of the estate stays closed to everyone but residents and Lodge guests. The effect is less that of a resort than of borrowing a very well-kept house from someone who belongs here, with the run of the grounds thrown in.

Why It Works

Three things settled it. The first is scale: forty units on an estate this size means no lobby crowd and no queue for a lounger, which the large beachfront properties down the hill cannot promise. The second is what comes with the key, namely full access to The Club at Kukui‘ula: Hi‘ilani Spa, the serenity pools and the saltwater lagoon, the Tom Weiskopf golf course, tennis and pickleball, and a working farm. The third is the format. Separate bedrooms, a real kitchen and laundry make a week here workable in a way a hotel room is not, and none of it costs you the service.

Why This Location

The address is 2700 Ke Alaula Street, on the rise behind Poipu rather than on the sand, and that trade is deliberate. A few minutes down the hill are Poipu Beach Park and the snorkelling at Lawai Beach; the shops and market at The Shops at Kukui‘ula are close enough to walk when the evening is cool. Old Koloa Town and its plantation storefronts sit just inland. West, the road climbs to Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau lookout; east, Lihue and the airport are about thirty minutes. Up here the nights are quiet and the trade winds do most of the cooling.

Bungalows, Cottages and the Four-Bedroom Villas

The stock divides cleanly. One-bedroom bungalows and two-bedroom cottages suit couples and small families, with a lanai, an outdoor shower in several, and the plantation vocabulary of deep eaves and board walls. The villas run to three and four bedrooms and are the reason large groups come: living space that holds everyone at once, a kitchen built for cooking rather than for reheating, and in some cases a private plunge pool and a detached guest cottage. Ask about the units on the upper drives if an ocean view matters; the lower ones trade the horizon for garden seclusion.

The Spa, the Pools and the Ten-Acre Farm

Hi‘ilani Spa is adults only, which is the point of it on a property that welcomes children everywhere else: hydrotherapy circuit, Hawaiian-inflected treatments, and enough quiet to make an afternoon of it. The pool complex is unusual for the island, pairing infinity-edge serenity pools with a sprawling saltwater lagoon shallow enough for small children. The Farm is the detail people remember. Ten acres of tropical fruit, vegetables and cut flowers, open to guests to harvest, and the reason the kitchen in your villa gets used at all.

What to Know Before You Book

Check-in is at midday and check-out at ten, both firmer than at a large resort, so plan the last morning. Children are welcome throughout the residences and the lagoon; pets are not accepted. Step-free access is not confirmed across the estate, and the drives are long and sloping, so ask before booking if mobility is a factor. A car is close to essential: the beaches, Koloa and the west side all assume one. Golf, spa and outfitter bookings go through the concierge and fill early in the high season.
